When Joy was 18, she graduated from Mint Fields Regional School in the top 0.02 percent of her class - with honors - which was enough to qualify her for the admissions tests at the prestigious Reading Gunnery Academy. The week of Jump from her homeworld to Reading (where the tests were administered under strict supervision was an endless study session.

The week-long trip back to Helenium after she received her denial notice was significantly less engaging. By the time she returned to Helenium, she had made up her mind about her future, and over the protests of her family joined the CSRN as a tank operator. Her high marks and athleticism had her moved into a special extravehicular reconnaissance operation, where she excelled. During the brief bloody period of ground fighting on Rouen, her division was mobilized along with the infantry across a three-hundred kilometer stretch of Spartan installations. The strain of long-distance movement taxed their logistics to the edge, but they made it. After the push was over, a review of her group's losses netted her a promotion, and she served the next two years as a lieutenant. She never forgot the value of being well-stocked.

At 22, her division was rotated out of service. She was moved to an administrative post where she spent more time at a terminal than in a cabin rig, but still managed to attend enough conflicts to be promoted again, to captain of her division.

At 26, she declined to renew her contract with the Army after being accepted into the CSRN's Large Craft Helm Division. While on patrol along the outskirts of Tigris, she became lovers with a fellow crewmate. The relationship lasted six months before they were discovered by their superior and both subjected to a disciplinary hearing. The mark on her otherwise flawless record may have been a setback, but three years later she was moved to the head of the helm crew. She served five more years as the pilot of the CSRS Philadelphia before uncovering a group of crewmen engaged in stripping extraneous systems from Philadelphia's lower decks. They offered her a cut of the sizable profits, but she reported them within the hour, and arranged for them to be caught in the act. The result of her actions was a commendation and a commission. Helm Operator Potter was now Sublieutenant Potter.

With the Treaty of Harbin ratified two months later, she was moved out of active service and back into a desk job. At 0830 Seine Standard Time, 4 March 2498, after nearly three years of holo-pushing, she arrived at what she thought was an ordinary briefing session only to learn about her transfer to active duty in Hydra Sector. As a requirement of the position, she underwent cybernetic reflex augmentation surgery. Currently, the only thing saving her from the assembled protein slabs they serve is her childhood of lutefisk.
