The Extrasolar Jump Drive Effort (acronym EJDE pronounced 'edge') was a UN-backed research initiative begun in the late 21st century to develop a working superluminal propulsion system. The production of a functional jump drive led to the colonization of nearby systems, and the growing need to supply them, and further expansion - and all of these responsibilities eventually passed to the EDJE Committee, to the point where EDJE oversaw more than 50 colonies across multiple sectors. In 2183 the EJDE was formally dissolved and Earth became the first signatory to the Articles of Mutual Support and Defense, the founding document of the Terran Stellar League.
