18 - 22: So the rough idea is that a conspiracy of nobles who have their hands in numerous pies in the Republic try to recruit Eric, who is in line to inherit his family's planet. Part of the deal include his parents and siblings being assassinated to deliver the power to him. Though he believes he can manage their water business better than his older brother, he still likes his family a fair bit and balks at the prospect of having them killed. The Conspiracy cannot let anyone know of their existence since after more recent witchhunts in the Republic, it is possible someone might believe the Eric otherwise seemingly-crazy warnings. Eric's family sends him into hiding as "Eric Ritter." During this time, he generally floats around Republic Space doing various work as a hand model (so the Conspiracy doesn't see his face).
22 - 26: Gets married to long time boon companion, Jacqueline Bernard, who is actually an agent with the government trying to crack the Conspiracy open. There's totally no conflict of interest here, no siree. She eventually comes clean to him about her job, and after something freaking out he's cool with that. They spend the next few years dodging bullets and chasing leads that go nowhere.
26-30: Book learnin'. Feudin'. Duelin'.
