deMarquis-class heavy cruiser

Named for Human-Skaald War-era hero Admiral Louis Renault deMarquis, the deMarquis-class cruiser is a venerable old cruiser in service since the interwar period - the first ship in the class, SLC L. R. deMarquis, came off the graving docks mere days before the breakup of the Terran Stellar League. It was a key component of the holding actions in the Core Systems-Spartan War, delaying Spartan battlefleets while crucial personnel, equipment, civilian populations and such were evacuated from the worlds of the Rimward Corridor. It remains a vigorously despised ship in Spartan eyes, symbolic of Republic engineering acumen. One of the most famous deMarquis-class vessels, CSRS Rackham, was captained by Andreas Markova in the Battle of Danube System, where it alone fended off a Spartan battlegroup of frigates, destroyers and a heavily damaged Marathon-class battleship.

The deMarquis's original incarnation was specced to carry heavily modified Vinetti particle cannon bays with experimental Particle-Decay-Reduction magnetic bottle technology; as the war dragged on, the increased price and touchy maintenance of these high-spec particle cannons meant that newer vessels have been mounted with less expensive, more robust weapons. Still, the original Vinetti PDR cannons have been highly coveted among those crews lucky enough to have access to them, and are only replaced with conventional models when damage prohibits their repair.
